One of Budapest's most popular and unforgettable attractions is Fisherman's Bastion (Hungarian: Halászbástya), which features spectacular architecture and panoramic views of the Danube River and the Pest historical district.

Learn about why it came into existence

The name ''Fishing'' came from the fact that this wall portion was probably given to the Guild for protection. Still, it is most likely the result of the fact that, in the middle ages, fishermen transported their wares to the fish market in the area next to the Matthias Church, possibly for two reasons at once. The Fisherman's Bastion, a decorated portion of the former wall, is currently roughly 140 meters long, with the southern portion being about 40 meters to the north and 65 meters long. It is lavishly ornamented, with a 35-foot-high central parapet.

The Bastion contains seven tall towers that stand in remembrance of the seven Hungarian chieftains that presided over the founding of the present-day nation in 895. Tunnels, arcades, and balustrades connect the Bastion's towers to one another.

It is well deserving of the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The 19th-century lookout towers and decorative fortification of Fisherman's Bastion were constructed to provide the best panoramic views of Budapest, Hungary. Naturally, there used to be genuine castle walls where you can now take amazing shots, but Buda's current building has never actually been utilized as a stronghold.

The Fishermen's Bastion's ceremonial, wide stairs offer a dramatic entry to the Castle Hill attractions and views of the Pest side landmarks. From bottom to top, the stairway displays additional historical statues, including the Statue of John Hunyadi, the Statue of St. George Piercing the Dragon (a replica of the Prague statue from the 15th century created by medieval Hungarian masters, the Kolozsvari Brothers), and the soldiers guarding the gate against the 10th century (at the top of the stairs, under the arch).
