Schönbrunn Zoo

The grounds of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna are home to one of the most well-known zoos in the world. Tiergarten Schönbrunn, founded in the middle of the 18th century, is the oldest continuously operating public zoo in the world. 

You can see hundreds of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish, and more at the Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna. 

How to explore Tiergarten Schönbrunn? 

Stop at a magnificent spot near the main entrance to view the gigantic pandas, Yang Yang and Yuan Yuan. The red pandas have a new, equally verdant enclosure to call home.

• A Rainforest house is a large glass structure with two stories that simulate a rainforest environment, right down to the fake thunderstorms. Explore the ground and treetops of a tropical forest and look up to see the flying monkeys, toucans, and other species that have made their home there. The facility features several pools and smaller enclosures where animals like Asian small-clawed otters and vampire crabs can live safely (not quite as exciting as they sound).
• Explore a bat cave there, which is inhabited by real bats. 
• You can see crocodiles, fish, and even free-flying birds and butterflies at the aquarium, which is a somewhat large open water area. 
• Check out the shoals of tropical fish, anemones, and corals in the 80,000-liter reef aquarium. 
• Step through a 7.5-meter-long glass tunnel resembling an Amazonian forest's flooded bottom. You will never get another opportunity to observe stingrays from such a unique perspective again. 
• The terrarium is home to a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians, as well as the occasional spider, ant tubes, and ant chambers. 
• The polar bears' massive new enclosure is one of the zoo's newest features. One of the most exciting visuals is the polar bears going underwater. 
• Compared to elephants in most zoos, African elephants have a spacious enclosure and residence. Animal keepers putting the animals through their paces is a hit with the kids. 
• Visit the big cat house to see tigers, cheetahs, and leopards in their indoor and outdoor habitats. 
• A large number of penguins and a large pool for sea lions can be found in the polarium. Check them out afar to witness their wild activities. 
• A Tyrolean farmhouse has been relocated to the zoo. It is now used to nurture endangered domestic animals and to serve organic treats and traditional Austrian cuisine to the zoo's not-so-rare visitors.
