Megalochori - Traditional Village

Megalochori is a charming, vibrant community with pleasant, outgoing locals. The village's hub, the central square, is where inhabitants congregate in classic cafes to relax and have fun, fostering a cozy atmosphere. Spending an evening here is unquestionably worthwhile if only to share in this atmosphere and enjoy regional cuisine in the lush shade of the trees. Traditional cafes, pubs, and stores can also be found in the village's other locations.

You can see distinctive buildings, including neoclassical residences, majestic dwellings, and old cave homes with sturdy high walls and wooden doors that were used as a deterrent against pirates, as you walk along the cobbled paths. You may view pictures from the 17th century on several of these because they have been restored. The complex steeples of the magnificent churches, two of which stand in the middle of the hamlet, are another distinctive feature of Megalochori.

In the village, there are additional charming chapels and churches to discover. For instance, the chapel of Agios Nikolaos is situated in a prime spot on the caldera cliffs, offering breathtaking views and a spectacular vantage point in a serene, bright environment.

The location of the settlement affords magnificent views of the mesmerizing caldera on the west and a huge valley full of the famed Megalochori vineyards on the east. Additionally, it is home to three of the most significant and outstanding wineries, Gavalas, Boutaris, and Antoniou, where you may explore, learn about the development of wine and its history, and, of course, enjoy special volcanic wine kinds.

The remarkable beaches to the south, such as Eros and Vlychada, are easily accessible from Megalochori, which is situated on the southwest coast of Santorini and is about 9 kilometers from the island's capital Fira. Two distinct, captivating beaches may be visited from Megalochori on the caldera side: Plaka and Thermi. 

They are far away, have hot springs and healing waters, and can only be reached on foot or by boat. Therasia can be seen in all its glory, and the volcanic cliff that encircles it is breathtaking. One chapel is prominently located above each beach. There are lavish suites, villas, classy hotels, and flats available for rent that have great views of either the caldera or the plain.

Many of these magnificent homes now provide reasonably priced overnight lodging with quick access to local eateries and tavernas. Aside from these locations, the village's center, which serves as the core of locals' social lives, serves as the focal point of the Megalochori.
