Swan River

The Swan River was essential in establishing the Swan River Colony, the first permanent European settlement in Western Australia. The colony was established in 1829, and it eventually grew into the city of Perth.

The Swan River is named after the native black swans (Cygnus atratus) of the area. These magnificent birds are still visible in the river and its environs, and they have become an iconic symbol of Western Australia.
