A massive neoclassical statue, the Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in the harbor of New York. This statue represents freedom and democracy; it was a gift to the United States of America from the French community in 1886. The majestic statue depicts a woman with a torch clenched in her right hand and a tablet in her left, and the monument towers over 305 feet into the air.

The plaque bears the date July 4, 1776, which is the day the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted. The seven oceans and seven continents are represented by the seven spikes on the statue's crown.

French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi collaborated with engineer Gustave Eiffel, who would go on to create the Eiffel Tower, on the creation of the Statue of Liberty. The statue took 350 separate pieces to be created in France and transported back to the US. It was eventually placed on a pedestal on Liberty Island.

As a symbol of democracy and freedom, this statue has risen to prominence as one of the world's most recognizable landmarks.
