The fortified old town of Dalt Vila is perched on a tiny mountain near the sea and looks out over the town. Dalt Vila, which translates to 'Upper Town,' and formerly known as Ibosim, was founded by the Phoenicians. It has been expanded by several rulers and was once one of the most significant coastal cities in the Mediterranean.

The Renaissance defense walls that surround it, built by Kings Charles I and Philip II of Spain to protect it from the French and Ottomans, have been a recent addition. Around this enormous mashup of history, old buildings, and walls, there are surprises and incredible photo opportunities.

The small, twisting, steep cobblestone lanes, stunning views from the breaches in the towering ramparts, and expansive terraces at each level are best explored on foot while wearing good footwear.

How to explore Dalt Vila?

  • The impressive main entrance is up a slope, and it passes through the Portal de Ses Taules before entering an old courtyard with cobblestones.
  • After passing through the entrance, you will immediately come to the Plaza de Vila, the city's central square, where you will discover a variety of eateries, art galleries, and shops selling locally made goods.
  • The world-class Contemporary Art Museum, which can be approached from behind Plaza del Parque by Portal Nou, houses the ruins of an old Phoenician mansion. The Phoenicians were the ones who built what would eventually become a stronghold city, dealing in goods including dried, salted fish, salt, silver, and gold ingots.
  • Visit the hidden passageway that leads from San Ciriaco where the shrine of the patron saint resides. In the cobbled Career Mayor path leading up to the cathedral, the tunnel's outlet can be seen behind bars.
  • Candlelit dinners in a historic castle beneath the stars of the Mediterranean is what you can get in this city.
  • At Cinema Paradiso, watch movies outside on a big screen while lounging in a comfortable bean bag and enjoying drinks and popcorn. One of the most evocative movie theater locations is here.
