The Pyramid of Sneferu, also known as the Bent Pyramid or the Southern Shining Pyramid, is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located in Dahshur, about 40 kilometers south of Cairo. It is named after Pharaoh Sneferu, who ruled during the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
The Pyramid of Sneferu is unique because it has two different angles of inclination. The lower part of the pyramid has a steep angle of 54 degrees, but halfway up, the angle changes to a more gradual 43 degrees. This change in angle gives the pyramid a bent appearance, hence its name.
The pyramid was originally built as a step pyramid, but during construction, the architects changed their plans and decided to give it a smooth surface by changing the angle of inclination. As a result, the pyramid is believed to be one of the earliest attempts at constructing a true, smooth-sided pyramid. It is made of limestone and stands at a height of 101 meters, with a base of 188 meters. The burial chamber of Sneferu is located in the subterranean part of the pyramid, and it was discovered in 1956.
The pyramid's inner chambers are accessible via a series of ladders leading to the entrance. Even though it's not easy to get to the top of the pyramid, once you're there you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
