Fort Lovrijenac

For the people of Dubrovnik, the Lovrijenac Fort, a significant stronghold that guarded the city for hundreds of years, symbolizes tenacity. Due to its dramatic location on a rock that protrudes into the Adriatic Sea, this historical attraction is known as Dubrovnik's Gibraltar.

Learn about the historical significance: 

A Lovrijenac is a magnificent stronghold situated on a rock outcrop 37 meters in height and overlooks the expansive sea.

The majestic Lovrijenac was a defense castle against attacks from the sea and land and was located on the western side of Dubrovnik.

During the time it was in use, this stronghold had a garrison consisting of a commander and a total of 25 soldiers.

Peruse the sea from the parapets while strolling along the terraces:

Consider Lovrijenac Fort's unusual triangular shape, which follows the contours of the sizable rock on which it is perched. 

While the walls facing the city are less than 24 inches (60 centimeters) thick, those facing the sea are nearly 40 feet (12 meters) thick. This was done on purpose because if an enemy had captured the fort, it would be simpler for the city to launch a counterattack. 

To access the main entrance, climb the steep staircase. Read 'Nonbene pro toto libertas venditur auro,' carved over the gateway, at the top. 'Freedom cannot be sold for all the gold in the world' is how this is translated.

Because it was used as the imposing setting for the Red Keep on the program, the fortress has become one of the most well-known sites among fans of Game of Thrones. You'll be able to visit the locations within the fort where some of the most iconic sequences involving characters like Cersei and Joffrey took place (as well as get phenomenal ocean views).

Visit the church in the premises:

The Lovrijenac Fortress comprises a large quadrilateral court and its three terraces. The fort contains a church dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Look for the portrait of St. Lawrence in one of the nooks and observe the old canons and stacks of cannonballs. 

Its courtyard features a cistern and is an enchanted location for staging theatre productions:

The use of Lovrijenac as a stage is a relatively recent addition to the fort's past, and the staging of Shakespeare's Hamlet has come to represent the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

In the summers of 2017 and 2018, this location hosted a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream as part of Midsummer Scene.

The last week of June 2017 saw filming for the scenes intended to represent the Siege of Acre for the television show Knightfall, a historical fiction drama about the Knights Templar.
