Darat al Funun

Darat al Funun is a 'house for the arts' that has evolved into a gathering place for artists, focusing on artistic practices, experimentation, and critical conversation, as well as a haven for scholars and fellows.

It presents a singular interaction between art, architecture, archaeology, and landscaping and is housed in six rebuilt historical buildings and warehouses with a restored archaeological site in the garden. See the photo tour for more details about the structures, display areas, and abroad while offering an infrastructure for an entire trajectory of artistic creativity.

It is equally dedicated to study and practice, as well as artists and their audiences. Additionally, the Khalid Shoman Collection is housed at Darat al Funun. The collection was one of the first of its sort to be created in the early 1980s and is solely focused on modern art from the Arab world and its diasporas.

An excellent library and contemporary works of art from the Arab world are displayed in this exhibition. All of this is located in a fantastic Mediterranean home from the 1920s, complete with lovely hanging gardens, a fountain, and a shady café on a wooden porch that enjoys the cooling breezes of the city.

The Khalid Shoman Collection of contemporary Arab art is held and displayed by Darat al Funun, which organizes curated exhibitions, talks, film screenings, and educational programs. It also supports experimental projects at the Lab, hosts performances and concerts provide Ph.D. fellowships and artist residencies, and publishes books and catalogs.

The Lab at Darat al Funun is an experimental setting that promotes artistic experimentation by facilitators and artists from many fields. They are currently soliciting applications to work on, produce, or curate original projects and plan a series of lectures, workshops, or movie screenings. They want to collaborate closely with participants to produce interactive projects that engage the public in ways that go beyond the scope of traditional exhibitions. Artists, filmmakers, designers, architects, performers, curators, and other creative minds are welcome to submit this invitation.

The architectural aspects of the location are almost as important as the artistic endeavors of the center. All of this is located in a sumptuous Mediterranean home from the 1920s, complete with lovely hanging gardens, a fountain, and a shady café on a wooden porch that enjoys the cooling breezes of the city.
